Community Service
Community Service is something the women of Alpha Sigma Alpha take pride in. We each do a total of 25 community service hours a semester, excluding the new members who do a total of 10 hours their first semester. This makes Alpha Sigma Alpha the leading sorority in community service on The Northwest Missouri State University Campus. In 2008 Alpha Sigma Alpha received the community service award from Alpha Sigma Alpha national headquarters. Some ways in which we help out the community are going to Kids Korner at the local hospital where we donate books to children and newborn babies, walking dogs at the humane society, donating canned goods to the local food pantry, Highway Cleanup, and raising money for St. Jude's Up 'till dawn.
In the spring of 2009 Abby Freeman started "Be the Change Week". This was inspired by an Alpha alumni, Amber Commer, who in 2008 raised money by making and selling leather bracelets with "Be the Change" stamped in them. The money she raised was given to St. Baldrick's Foundation which raises money for kids with cancer. Amber also shaved her hair off and donated it to make a wig for a child who has lost their hair due to chemotherapy. What Alpha Sigma Alpha did in the spring was made and sold the leather bracelets and put in community service hours around campus with the help of other organizations. The money raised was used to throw a celebration for the "Big Brothers Big Sisters" Program here in Maryville, Missouri. This was something new and exciting done in 2009 and there are hopes of it getting bigger and bigger each year. The main focus is to raise awareness that you can be the change you wish to see in the world; you just have to start with a dream and a passion.
